Research on Latin America, Gender Conference in Buenos Aires

1.Gender perspectives in Latin America: a key for development; Is a session organized by Maria Camou and Silvana. Maubrigades in the 5th URUGUAYAN MEETING ON ECONOMIC HISTORY – AUDHE that will be held from 23 to 25 November 2011. The aim of the group of researchers is to elaborate a global, comparative history of the evolution of the gender gap in some basic indicators of human development, namely education, health and income for the XX century in Latin America . The group  plan to continue working on this topic. 2.- The Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation and the Journal "Nueva Sociedad" organized in Buenos Aires on Friday 18.11.2011 a conference on the gender-specific impacts of the financial and economic crisis in Europe and Latin America . On the basis of an analysis of the current economic situation in Europe and Latin American, Feminist economists from the region  discussed proposals for a reform of the global economic system. The conference provided a forum for the exchange of ideas and to approach different topics that arise from the crisis. A policy paper analizing the european and the latinamerican case will be published at the end of the year. Iaffe members ( Rosalba Todaro , Alma Espino , Norma Sanchis , Valeria Esquivel, Corina Rodriguez Enriquez , Silvia Berger, Magdalena León) participated in the conference.

 

3.-Esquivel, Valeria. 2011.  “The care economy in Latin America : putting care at the centre of the agenda”, United Nations Development Programme. This publication is the second of a series of booklets: “Undoing knots: innovating for change” and is promoted by UNDP’s Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean- through its Gender Practice Area, ISBN 978-9962-663-15-7 http://www.americalatinagenera.org/es/documentos/Atando_Cabos_2_Ingles.pdf  With this second publication of the “Undoing knots, innovating for change ” booklets, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean, through its Gender Practice Area, again provides Latin American governments and citizens with an innovative reflection that puts the themes of equality and care work in the centre of the development agenda for the region. As the name indicates, these booklets seek to untie knots, connect the dots, and overcome obstacles to allow advances in equality; they also attempt to highlight transcendental themes, provide new perspectives on long-running debates, present twists on traditional solutions, and look for alternative paths in social and economic policy.
