Opposition to Trump Administration policies re treatment of migrants and asylum seekers

June 27, 2018

We write as feminist economists from many countries to express our opposition to recent Trump Administration policies related to the treatment of migrants and asylum seekers.  First, immigration officials have been separating children and parents at the borders when they entered as refugees. Even if this practice changes as a result of the recent executive order,  parents and children will continue to be detained when they attempt to enter the U.S.  And there seem to be no plans to reunite those families who were separated over the past few weeks.

Second, the United States has removed domestic or gang violence as a basis for asylum, which had been particularly important for women and children to gain protection in life-threatening situations.

The International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) is a nonprofit organization that does not take partisan positions, but does speak out on policy debates that relate to concerns of feminist economics.
